October 17, 2009 - Late This Month
|
Well, while I am a week later than usual, as I try to update the second weekend of each month, that does nto mean that nothing has been updated elsewhere here. As I try to make sure I remind everyone of, the programs and links are updated much more frequently than once a month. I do my best to make sure that things are up-to-date, and that new applications I come across, that I find useful or interesting are added once every week or two. Also, on another note, a few big things coming up in the tech industry are the release of Windows 7 on October 22, as well as Ubuntu and openSUSE looking to release a new version of their Linux distros. In addition, Oracle hosted its annual OpenWorld conference last week, and I must admit I am very impressed with the Exadata 2 data warehousing and online transaction processing machine, which, as Oracle points out, is the fastest machine for both of these tasks on the planet. IBM has come out with similar machines, but they are not as fast. In fact, Oracle claims that their Oracle-Sun machine is 16x faster than IBM's. IBM, however, claims that this is an inaccurate statement, and that Oracle's machine is only 6x faster. I don't really know that it much matters. However, Oracle is offering $10 million to anyone, including IBM, who can find an application that runs faster on IBM's machine than it does on Oracle's. Also, I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials now, for about two weeks, and must say that I am impressed. The one thing I have to ask of that team is to please add an AutoUpdate feature. One of my favorite things about an application, such as Trend Micro Internet Security, is that it allows the automatic update of the definition files, either silently, or at least notifying me on a time interval I set of when new updates are available. If Microsoft incorporates a similar feature into Security Essentials, it would be difficult for Trend Micro to convince me to switch back. Also, one important thing about Security Essentials worth mentioning is that it is absolutely FREE. Anyone running XP, Vista, or soon Windows 7 should at least give it a test drive. That's about it for this one, but I encourage the continuing feedback, and hope that everyone will continue to come back and check for updates.
